Another gem from Shetroit.com. Shirley Bolden talks rapping, knowledge, stereotypes and the hood with her inner city students.
Singing Lessons with Vincent Harding

The 2011 Allied Media Conference was an impressive affair with a wide range of programming. I was drawn to a session featuring three elders-Egyptian composer Halim El-Dabh, the grandfather of African electronic music; Detroit's own Grace Lee Boggs and Vincent Harding, who worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr.

Event space inside a former fire house in Detroit's Eastern Market area. Art exhibitions, sound installations, concerts and much more...
Engine Company #4 built in 1879, also happens to be adjacent to St Anne’s Church. This is the same church that Fr. Gabrielle Richard first penned, Speramus meliora; resurget cineribus. We Hope For Better Things, It Shall Rise From The Ashes. A Detroit motto as poignant today, as it was after the Great Fire of 1805. I cannot imagine presenting this performative installation, which speaks of the next generation of Detroit’s creative class, in a more significant place.

Mission
We are improving the quality of life by making locally grown fruits and vegetables available, providing healthy eating/cooking education and creating green jobs.
Vision
Our vision is a community being healthier, youth making better eating choices, youth and families taking ownership of their community, a community with beautiful clean green spaces, and a community economically sustainable.
Values
- Professional
- Commited to excellence
- Commited to care of the environment
- Excellent customer service
It was in 2008 that we started planning the Oakland Avenue Community Garden with the inclusion of the community residents, Greening of Detroit and stakeholders. We broke ground April of 2009 on Global Youth day with the volunteers from Greening of Detroit and Youthville of Detroit. In 2009, we grew tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, collards, peppers, kale, potatoes, strawberries, rasberries, onion and cabbage. All produce was available for the community to freely harvest and fed over 100 families.
in 2010, we grew over 1700 lbs. of produce; tomatoes, green beans, squash, cucumbers, peppers, herbs, beets, eggplant, carrots, lettuce, greens, collards, spinach, kale, cabbage, crowder and black eye peas, onions, potatoes, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe and broccoli. Over 500 families from the community visited and harvested as needed and often volunteered their time during the season.
Farmers Market Grand Opening
We will open the Oakland Avenue Farmers Market on May 14, 2011 with a new goal of bringing jobs to the community. We have a team of eleven committed individuals developing green skills. Our youth group (St. John's Youth Making a Difference) has over twenty-five member agres 5 to 16. We are leading the other five major community gardens in strategic production growing and plan to expand the number of jobs we create by year 2016 to twenty. We are brining value added products (fresh fruits and vegetables grown using organic methods), a clean green social space, and a venue promoting economic growth in our community.

Regardless of age, level of education, sophistication, whether from the city, suburb or farm, people are amazed when they first walk into YouthVille Detroit. In a few short years, it has become a landmark of hope and pride for the city of Detroit, the region and the state. It is a destination point for youth needing an infusion of belongingness and a safe and nurturing place to have fun, dream, learn, and participate.
