Miracle on Mt. Elliott-The Fierce Urgency of Now

22 Jan

I returned home the other night, troubled, dazed, and in disbelief. Yet another one of those miracle moments.

We are an intentional community living together in Southwest Detroit, born out of the Catholic Worker tradition and focused on a reality of shared humanity. We journey together on the path toward a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world, mindful of the work done and struggles endured by the Cloud of Witnesses who went before us.

We are invested in the urban agriculture revolution happening in Detroit. We strive to be co-creators of a city and a society that recognizes the interconnection of Earth and humanity. We nourish and are nourished by the Planet, in the belief that access to fresh, healthy food is a right and with the knowledge that this right is daily denied to millions everywhere.

We practice acts of hospitality. With a love of and compassion for the Earth and all those who inhabit her, we strive to create and embody a welcoming space and spirit. We invite those we know and those we don’t to share our home, a meal, our vision, our work…

We practice acts of nonviolent resistance. With an open acknowledgment of our own inheritance of and implicit participation in systems founded in and laden with inequality, we strive to resist these powers and to build alternate systems. We renounce those systems that threaten the entitlements of food, shelter, and human dignity. We seek to create new systems that support physical and mental health, peace, community, and mutual respect for all.

We seek to live lives of active spirituality as experienced through sustainability, simplicity, communal living, hospitality, and resistance. We acknowledge spiritual roots and are inspired by the examples of peace and justice found in sacred texts and traditions. In coming together we become more than the sum of our parts, growing together and deepening our spirituality in our work.

This vision is humbly lived in the recognition of those gone before us and with the joyful hope of being part of that continued tradition. We hope and pray that this mission, begun before us, will continue after us.

A grassroots, not-for-profit movement to transform a devastated, burned-out Detroit city neighborhood into a sustainable, eco-friendly, intentional community that will be the grounds for urban farming, residential and creative space for artists, healers, musicians, and like-minded, forward-thinking, progressive individuals, families, small businesses, and the surrounding community already in place.

Imagine a place, completely desolate and abandoned, devastated and burnt-out. Imagine a third-world-country, post-apocalyptic-feeling neighborhood, within Detroit City Limits, waiting for the right group of people to gather together to create lasting change and a positive impact that will forever change the way we live.

Imagine working together to transcend limitations and lift that broken place into a community that is sustainable, in line with the highest good of all people and all beings, and that will provide not only all of life’s basic necessities, but will encourage people to reach their fullest human potential, so that together we may grow into  a life of sustained abundance, prosperity, and conscious evolution. Together we have the power to manifest dreams into reality, to create Heaven on Earth, and to live harmoniously with each other and with our planet, so that our children and our children’s children may experience a life full of Bliss, Creativity, and Fullness.

Imagine that ghetto within Detroit becoming an example to the rest of the world that real change is possible, that we as human beings are capable of being sovereign, beautiful creatures that can reclaim our divinity and our birth right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
